THE PASSAGE OF THE DENTURES - 1

THE PASSAGE OF THE DENTURES - 1

DR H.L. CHULANI

I am a colorectal surgeon. The colon and rectum are the last part of the intestines concerned with the disposal of what we have eaten. Most of the large intestine is housed within the abdominal cavity part is the anal opening. Let me dispel a myth. To most, a surgeon means a doctor who operates on the human body. While this may be mostly true, it does not mean that one visits a surgeon only when an operation is necessary. On occasions, when the disease would respond to medicine alone, the surgeon does not undertake an operation. There is a maxim that surgeon is one who knows when NOT to operate.

Another myth is the status of a doctor in society. A doctor is held by most as a demi-God who is able to cure all illnesses. It is proper to remember that a doctor is but human, who has a special training in treating the human body and the human mind. In modern society, there is hardly any need to accord the doctor the status which was accorded to him during medieval times. It is in the interest of an individual to seek a second opinion especially when any surgical operation has been advised. Unnecessary operations are more frequent than one would like to believe.
