BEHIND THE CURTAIN 8

BEHIND THE CURTAIN 8

DR SATEESH R. GUPTE

An anaesthetist works in situations where only a thin line divides life from death. No one who has worked long enough in this branch of medicine has escaped anxious moments. This makes one very humble. One has to discipline oneself to be eternally vigilant, all alert. Patients have been known to die despite all care, caution and diligence because of many factors like poor pre-operative conditions, unexpected reactions or other complications. At such times one is helpless. I pray to God every morning before I leave for work that no harm should come to anybody because of any shortcoming on my part! There are occasions when things go wrong, even when one has done one's best. It is at such times that anaesthetists must be wondering whether it was at all wise on their part to have chosen this speciality where name, fame and riches are by no means commensurate with the risks taken.
