Cheerful Environment

 The importance of a cheerful environment for sick patients is brought out by a study done in a hospital in Boston, USA. Ten patients were admitted for gall-bladder surgery under the same surgeon and the same nursing staff. Five patients had their rooms facing a garden and a view of the outside world. The other five patients had their rooms facing a blind brick wall.

The patients in the front rooms needed less number of pain-killers and sleeping tablets and called the nurses less number of times and the nurses also had less problems with them than the patients in the back rooms. This shows the therapeutic effect of an attractive environment. Sending flowers to the patient is not merely a ritual!

Similarly, a cheerful and supporting attitude of the nursing and paramedical staff makes all the difference to a suffering patient. Service with a smile is nowhere else more welcome than in a hospital. Laughter, sympathy and aspirin are capable of relieving most painful situations.
